About the treatment

Over time, your skin loses its full, firm, youthful appearance as a result of natural ageing. As the skin starts thinning and losing its natural elasticity, it becomes loose and starts to wrinkle. You also gradually lose the fatty tissue that helps to fill out your face, causing the skin to sag and wrinkle even more. The loss of facial volume can make your face look thin and narrow, with sunken cheeks – sometimes to the extent of making you look older than you actually are.

Sculptra is a simple, injectable volumising treatment that works by stimulating the build-up of the body’s natural collagen to help smooth out lines and wrinkles. It also helps to restore lost facial volume to give you a fuller, younger-looking face. The enhancement is long lasting and looks completely natural. With Sculptra, you can restore facial contour and eliminate lines, wrinkles and sunken cheeks without resorting to face lifts or cosmetic surgery.

How does Sculptra work?

The injected volume of solution immediately corrects wrinkles and volume defects. Within a few days the water in Sculptra is absorbed by the body with a slight increase in volume depth again. After approximately 6 weeks’ improvement can be seen although to see optimum results a course of treatments is recommended, the final result of which can be seen within approximately 6-10 months’ post treatment.

Sculptra is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. Sculptra provides a gradual increase in volume. Sculptra will not correct the underlying cause of the facial fat loss, but will help improve the appearance by increasing skin thickness in the treated area.

As with all injections, some discomfort is inevitable, and you may feel a brief burning sensation at the injection site. An ice pack applied after the treatment can help to relieve this. If necessary, your nurse may also apply a local anesthetic prior to treatment.

As your aftercare instructions will explain, you massage the treated areas of your face for five minutes at a time, five times a day for the first five days after treatment.

Immediately following a treatment session with Sculptra, redness, swelling, pain, bruising or all of these signs can happen in the treatment area. These signs usually subside within a few hours to a few days. You should massage the treated area (a few times each day) for several days after the treatment session.

Within the first 24 hours after treatment, an ice pack should be applied for a few minutes at a time to the treatment area to help reduce swelling. Avoid excessive sun until any initial swelling and redness has resolved.

Generally, a course of treatments is usually required to obtain the best results.

Sculptra takes time to work, with the results becoming noticeable after about six weeks. It may appear to have an effect immediately after your first treatment visit, but this is because of swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute Sculptra. When the swelling goes down after a few days and the water is absorbed by your body, you may look as you did before treatment.

Two or three treatments are usually necessary to obtain the desired result. However, unlike some other treatments that require refresher sessions, the results can last for more than 2-3 years.  Results can differ depending on age, extent of volume loss, size of area being treated.

The most common short-lived side effect includes some bleeding, tenderness or mild pain, redness, bruising or swelling at the site of injection. Adverse reactions that can occur include extreme bruising, infection, granulomas, haematomas.

The cost of one Sculptra treatment is €400 (1 vial).
