About the treatment
Available at The Laser and Skin Clinic, Sclerotherapy leg vein removal treatment is a medical treatment used to treat and eliminate spider veins on legs including reticular veins. A solution called a sclerosing agent is injected into the veins to break down the vein wall, eliminating the unsightly appearance of the veins. About 80% of women suffer from spider veins on legs which are most often genetic but sometimes occur following pregnancy or after prolonged standing at work.
How does Sclerotherapy treatment work?
A tiny needle is used to inject a solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to swell and stick together, and the blood to clot. Overtime, the body will absorb the treated vein and it disappears resulting in a vein free clearer complexion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many of the things that seem to cause leg veins are difficult to avoid such as a family history. No creams or medication are available to prevent veins appearing. The earlier leg veins are treated the better to prevent larger veins developing. To prevent veins from developing we recommend;
- Elevating your legs
- Use support tights
- Maintain your ideal body weight to reduce excess pressure on your legs
- Avoid prolonged sitting and standing. On long trips, you should exercise calf muscle and if possible stop every few hours for short walks.
- Protect your skin from the sun with a broad spectrum sunscreen and antioxidant
- Avoid extremes of heat and cold
Depending on the size of area being treated a gauze dressing and compression tape may be applied to each area of the leg and can be removed the following day.
Sclerotherapy is a treatment for the symptoms rather than the cure for the cause, other veins may develop. Most people need a top up session every 1-2 years. If you have underlying varicose veins, you are recommended to see a Vascular Specialist to treat the larger vessels before treating the smaller superficial veins.
It is also possible for some larger veins to develop a small degree of thrombophlebitis were the vessel can feel hard, warm and a little sore. These symptoms resolve spontaneously. Larger veins may require compression for a little longer to help minimise this problem.
- Walk for 10 minutes
- Avoid standing for long periods of time
- Avoid strenuous activity, jogging, high impact aerobics, or weight lifting for 1 week after treatment
- Avoid hot baths, sauna for 1 week after treatment
- Elevate legs every evening for the first week
- After treatment compression tights must be worn for 7 days to prevent any complications.
- Compression stockings should be worn 24hrs a day for 3 days post treatment and during the day for an additional 4 days
- Compression helps decrease the likelihood of blood re-entering the vein, especially if standing and exercising
- Compression reduces the risk of ‘blood clot’ formation, and reduces incidence of hyper pigmentation, and matting after Sclerotherapy
- Compression tights can be purchased at our clinics where you will be measured to obtain correct fit. Compression tights cost €35 per pair and is additional to the cost of Sclerotherapy treatment.
