Pigmentation
Pigmentation
Sun damage also referred to as skin pigmentation conditions are caused when the body produces either too much or too little melanin.
Your face, hands and chest are the first parts of the body to show signs of ageing as these areas receive so much sun exposure therefore protection is key daily to prevent further damage to the underlying layer of the skin. Genetics, environmental factors, sunlight, UVA/UVB rays, hormonal imbalances and medication all contribute to pigmentation changes in the skin. Skin pigmentation can occur in pregnant women due to the dramatic hormonal change the body undergoes. The contraceptive pill can also influence hormone levels that can react with UV rays and cause pigmented areas to occur in the skin.
Depending on the type and location of pigmentation we will recommend either laser or skin treatments combined with topical cosmeceutical products to achieve the best results.
The most common pigmentation conditions include:
- Sun spots – also known as age spots and lentignes
- Freckles – also known as ephilides
- Melasma – brown patches on face
Pigmentation can fall into 3 categories:
- Epidermal (superficial) pigmentation – located close to the skin’s surface and caused mainly by sun exposure.
- Dermal pigmentation – found in the dermal layer of skin
- Combination dermal / epidermal pigmentation – penetrate through both the deeper layers of skin as well as the superficial layers e.g. melasma
- Minimise or eliminate the appearance of skin pigmentation
- Treats body and face areas
- Minimal side effects/recovery time and make-up can be worn after treatment
Treatment for skin pigmentation will depend on skin type and pigmentation type which will be assessed at your consultation. The most common Treatment Options for Sun Damage / Pigmentation are listed below.
