- Hyperpigmentation (darkening) and hypopigmentation (lightening)
- Mottled patches of reddish brown discoloration
- Visible prominent blood vessels (telangiectasia)
- Other symptoms can include: mild burning, itching and hyperesthesia

Poikiloderma seems to be caused by a combination of different factors. Research suggests that it is linked to excessive exposure to UV rays over time causing redness and pigment to appear on the surface of the skin. Poikiloderma occurs most frequently in middle aged women who are either in menopause or post menopausal stages. This suggests that Poikiloderma is related to hormonal changes that are correlated with age.
To reduce the visible effects treatment will be required. Daily SPF 30+ sun protection is the key to prevent further damage from UVA, UVB and free radicals.
With Poikiloderma, you are treating two skin concerns to resolve the problem. If the condition presents just redness on the sides of the face or chest we can treat with Cynosure’s Yag 1064 laser only. If there is pigmentation (dark patches present) then skin peels, resurfacing laser or topical products may be required.
Normally a course of treatments to reduce redness and veins. Once pigmentation has been assessed at your consultation your nurse can give you a more accurate guideline as to how many treatments may be necessary.
Fortunately, there are no health risks associated with Poikiloderma. Clients who have the condition usually seek treatment because they are mostly concerned with the cosmetic appearance of their skin.
