A solution called a sclerosing agent is injected into the veins to break down the vein wall, eliminating the unsightly appearance of the veins. Around 80% of women suffer from spider veins on their legs which are most often genetic but sometimes occur following pregnancy or after prolonged standing at work.

How does Sclerotherapy treatment work?

A tiny needle is used to inject a solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to swell and stick together and causing the blood to clot. Over time, the body will absorb the treated vein and it disappears, resulting in a vein-free, clearer complexion.

Benefits of Sclerotherapy

  • Quick and safe with minimal discomfort
  • Results after one treatment
  • Minimal recovery time
  • Preventative treatment to larger veins
  • Clear skin

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Spider veins and thread veins on legs, medically known as telangiectasia’s are dilated capillary veins less than 2 mm. in diameter. They are small blue to red appearing blood vessels that lie close to the surface of the skin and occur either in lines or web-like patterns.
The main factors the contribute to the appearance to leg veins and thread veins on legs veins can include; familial, heredity, age, gender, pregnancy, oestrogen, obesity, trauma, surgery and sun exposure.
The injections are made with a tiny needle and very superficially. A numbing spray is applied prior to treatment. Some people feel a little prick or slightly stingy, how uncomfortable varies from one person to another.
As Sclerotherapy is a medical skin treatment it must be performed by a medical practitioner and is available at our skin and laser clinics in Dublin, Athlone and Mullingar.

Many of the things that seem to cause leg veins are difficult to avoid such as a family history. No creams or medication are available to prevent veins appearing. The earlier leg veins are treated the better to prevent larger veins developing. To prevent veins from developing we recommend;

  • Elevating your legs
  • Use support tights
  • Maintain your ideal body weight to reduce excess pressure on your legs
  • Avoid prolonged sitting and standing. On long trips, you should exercise calf muscle and if possible stop every few hours for short walks.
  • Protect your skin from the sun with a broad spectrum sunscreen and antioxidant
  • Avoid extremes of heat and cold
Sclerotherapy treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the extent and size of the area being treated.
A typical Sclerotherapy leg vein removal session is relatively quick, lasting only about 30 to 1 hour. You will feel small needle pricks and possibly a mild burning sensation. Approximately one injection is administered for every inch of spider vein – anywhere from five to 40 injections per spider vein treatment session. Depending on the size of area being treated a gauze dressing and compression tape may be applied to each area of the leg and can be removed the following day.
This can vary depending on the size and severity of the leg veins being treated. Normally, clients will require a minimum of 4-6 treatments which are spaced approx. 6-12 weeks apart. On rare occasions, some individuals do not respond to Sclerotherapy.
There will be a visible improvement after only one Sclerotherapy session. Normally after treatment leg veins can appear darker and will fade after three weeks up to ten weeks. Smaller spider veins can fade completely after one treatment, compared with larger veins which can take further treatments. It is however, extremely important for you to continue with your treatment until the thread veins have completely faded to achieve long lasting results.
You should have a realistic expectation that whilst 80%+ clearance is common; 100% disappearance is rare. You should also be aware that the procedure treats only leg veins that are currently visible.; it does nothing to permanently alter the venous system or prevent new veins from surfacing in the future.

Sclerotherapy is a treatment for the symptoms rather than the cure for the cause, other veins may develop. Most people need a top up session every 1-2 years. If you have underlying varicose veins, you are recommended to see a Vascular Specialist to treat the larger vessels before treating the smaller superficial veins.

Normal treatment side effects that can occur are redness, swelling at injection site, mild to moderate bruising, itching. With larger vessels bruising can last longer, there may be discomfort, pain around injection site, and possible discolouration on skin.
We recommend 8-12 week intervals between treatments to achieve maximum fading.
After treatment compression tights must be worn for 7 days to prevent any complications. Depending on size of veins treated, bruising can last anything from a few days to three weeks. Due to bruising the treated areas can look worse before they improve and it is necessary to be patient to obtain a good result. Occasionally bruising around larger veins can remain for several weeks.

It is also possible for some larger veins to develop a small degree of thrombophlebitis were the vessel can feel hard, warm and a little sore. These symptoms resolve spontaneously. Larger veins may require compression for a little longer to help minimise this problem.

  • Walk for 10 minutes
  • Avoid standing for long periods of time
  • Avoid strenuous activity, jogging, high impact aerobics, or weight lifting for 1 week after treatment
  • Avoid hot baths, sauna for 1 week after treatment
  • Elevate legs every evening for the first week
  • After treatment compression tights must be worn for 7 days to prevent any complications.
  • Compression stockings should be worn 24hrs a day for 3 days post treatment and during the day for an additional 4 days
  • Compression helps decrease the likelihood of blood re-entering the vein, especially if standing and exercising
  • Compression reduces the risk of ‘blood clot’ formation, and reduces incidence of hyper pigmentation, and matting after Sclerotherapy
  • Compression tights can be purchased at our clinics where you will be measured to obtain correct fit. Compression tights cost €60 per pair and is additional to the cost of Sclerotherapy treatment.
At The Laser and Skin Clinic we recommend Laser Vein Removal treatment for facial redness and thread veins most commonly seen on the cheeks and nose.
