Filters can blur texture in a second. Real skin, unfortunately, does not come with a swipe-right smoothing button.
Large-looking pores, acne scars, fine lines and rough or crepey texture are some of the concerns clients find most frustrating. They are also the concerns that make laser menus feel especially confusing. MOXI, ResurFX, HALO and CO₂ all resurface the skin — but at different depths and intensities.
Here is how we explain it in consultation.
First, what do we mean by skin texture?
Texture describes how smooth and even the skin surface looks and feels. It can change because of acne scarring, sun damage, reduced collagen, dehydration, ageing or a build-up of damaged surface cells.
Pores are normal structures and cannot be permanently deleted. They can, however, appear more obvious when the skin is oily, congested, sun damaged or losing firmness. Improving the surrounding skin quality can make them look more refined.
Acne scarring is more complex. Rolling, boxcar and ice-pick scars have different shapes and depths, so one device or one session rarely treats every scar equally. Sometimes laser is only one part of the plan.
MOXI: the lighter refresh
MOXI is a gentle non-ablative fractional laser. We often consider it for mild roughness, early sun damage, visible pores, uneven tone and skin that has started to look dull.
It is a great entry point when you want to improve overall quality without committing to an intensive recovery. It is not usually our first choice for deep, established acne scars, but it can be useful for more superficial concerns or ongoing maintenance.
ResurFX: resurfacing without removing the surface
ResurFX is a non-ablative fractional laser. It delivers tiny columns of energy into the skin while leaving the surface largely intact, stimulating new collagen as the skin repairs.
It can be used for fine lines, uneven texture, acne scarring and stretch marks on the face or body. Because collagen remodelling takes time, results develop gradually and a course may be advised.
For clients who want meaningful texture work with less downtime than an ablative laser, ResurFX can sit in a very useful middle ground.
HALO: treating tone and texture together
HALO combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths in one treatment. This allows us to work at different levels within the skin and makes it particularly useful when texture is not the only issue.
If your wish list includes pores, fine lines, acne scarring, pigmentation and sun damage, HALO may address several of those concerns within one treatment plan. It is more intensive than MOXI, so you should expect a more visible recovery period.
CO₂: the deeper resurfacing option
CO₂ laser is the most intensive resurfacing treatment in this group. It creates controlled micro-injuries that remove damaged surface tissue while stimulating collagen renewal at depth.
It may be recommended for deeper lines, more established acne scarring, pronounced sun damage, advanced texture or targeted concerns such as crepey skin around the eyes. It also comes with the greatest level of downtime and aftercare, so good preparation and realistic expectations are essential.
Stronger is not automatically better. The right treatment is the one that safely matches your skin, your concern and the recovery you can genuinely manage.
How many laser resurfacing sessions will you need?
That depends on the treatment and the starting point. A more intensive session may produce greater change in one treatment, while gentler options are often planned as a course. Collagen continues to remodel after the visible surface recovery has passed, so the final result is not judged after a few days.
We will also look at whether active acne needs to be controlled first and whether a combined plan — such as scar-focused treatment, skincare or another collagen-stimulating procedure — would make more sense.
Your treatment should fit your real life
