If your face always looks a little flushed, makeup never quite covers the redness or tiny veins have started appearing around your nose and cheeks, you are far from alone.
"Redness" is an umbrella term. It can mean a general pink or flushed background, rosacea, individual broken capillaries, cherry angiomas or a mixture of several things. The most suitable treatment depends on which of those we are actually seeing.
What is the difference between redness and rosacea?
General facial redness may be caused by sensitivity, sun damage, visible surface vessels or lifestyle triggers. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can involve flushing, persistent redness, visible vessels, sensitivity and sometimes acne-like bumps.
Laser and light treatments can reduce visible vessels and improve persistent redness, but they do not remove the underlying tendency towards rosacea. Think of treatment as management rather than a permanent cure. Skincare, sun protection and identifying personal triggers still matter.
When BBL may be recommended
BBL uses carefully selected wavelengths of light to target colour in the skin. It can be a good option when redness is more diffuse — meaning it is spread across an area rather than sitting in one obvious vessel.
It may also be helpful when redness and brown sun damage appear together. This is common after years of UV exposure: the skin can look both red and unevenly pigmented, particularly across the cheeks, nose, neck or chest.
BBL is often chosen by clients who want to improve overall clarity rather than chase one tiny capillary at a time.
When M22 IPL may be recommended
M22 IPL is another versatile light-based treatment. Different filters allow the clinician to tailor treatment towards redness, rosacea, vascular lesions or pigmentation.
Like BBL, it can suit areas of general redness and mixed discolouration. The device name matters less than the assessment, filter selection, settings and experience of the person treating you.
When a vascular laser may be better
If you can point to a specific broken vein or capillary and say, "That one, right there," a vascular laser may be the more precise option.
Vascular lasers are selected to target haemoglobin within the vessel. They may be used for visible facial veins, broken capillaries, persistent redness, cherry angiomas and selected leg veins. The size, colour, depth and location of the vessel determine whether it is suitable and how many sessions may be needed.
Not every visible leg vein is a cosmetic-laser case. Larger, raised, painful or symptomatic veins may require medical vascular assessment instead.
Will one session clear all redness?
Occasionally a small isolated vessel responds very quickly, but diffuse redness and rosacea commonly need a course. New vessels can also develop over time, particularly when rosacea, genetics or sun exposure are involved, so maintenance may be recommended.
Results vary because skin does. We would rather give you a realistic plan than promise that one treatment will permanently erase every trace of redness.
What should you do between treatments?
Keep things calm and consistent. Use gentle skincare, avoid scrubbing or repeatedly changing active ingredients, and wear broad-spectrum SPF every day. It can also help to notice whether heat, alcohol, spicy food, stress, exercise or particular products trigger flushing for you.
If your eyes feel persistently gritty, sore or inflamed, or if you have a sudden change in redness, speak with your GP or an appropriate medical professional. Rosacea can affect the eyes and needs proper assessment.
