September means one thing in our clinics: laser season is officially back.
After months of brighter days, holidays and more time outdoors, you may notice that your skin looks a little different. Freckles can appear darker, sun spots may be more obvious and your complexion might feel dull, dry or uneven. If you have redness or rosacea, heat and sun exposure may have made that more noticeable too.
The good news? Autumn is a brilliant time to press reset.
Why does skin often look more uneven after summer?
Even when you are diligent with SPF, your skin is still exposed to more daylight during spring and summer. UV exposure can stimulate melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. This is why freckles, areas of sun damage and uneven pigmentation often look darker after summer.
Heat, travel, air conditioning, late nights and changes to your usual routine can also leave the skin looking dehydrated and tired. Essentially, September is when many of us look in the mirror and think, "Right, my skin needs a little help."
So, why is autumn called laser season?
Many laser and light treatments make the skin temporarily more sensitive to sunlight. Some also work by targeting pigment, which means recent tanning or strong sun exposure can affect whether treatment is suitable.
As we move into autumn, UV levels generally begin to ease and most of us spend less time in direct sun. That can make it easier to plan treatment safely, protect the skin afterwards and complete a recommended course over the cooler months.
That does not mean SPF can be packed away until next summer. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection remains essential before and after treatment, even on cloudy Irish days. You will also need to tell your clinician about any recent sun exposure, tanning or upcoming sunny holidays.
Which treatment is best for post-summer skin?
That depends on what you are actually seeing in the mirror.
If freckles, sun spots or redness are your main concern: BBL® or M22™ IPL may be recommended to target visible colour in the skin and improve overall clarity.
If your skin feels dull, rough or uneven: MOXI® offers gentle fractional resurfacing to refresh tone, texture and early signs of sun damage with relatively little disruption.
If you want to address pigmentation and texture together: HALO® goes further by combining ablative and non-ablative wavelengths in one treatment. It can improve visible sun damage, pores, fine lines and uneven texture.
If scarring, deeper lines or more advanced texture are bothering you: ResurFX™ or CO₂ laser resurfacing may be more appropriate, depending on the level of correction and downtime you are comfortable with.
If you can see individual facial veins or broken capillaries: a specialist vascular laser may give us the precision needed to target those vessels directly.
This is exactly why we do not believe in a one-laser-fits-all approach. A treatment that is perfect for your friend may not be the right choice for your skin type, concern or lifestyle.
Start with a proper skin assessment
Laser + Skin Clinics has been treating skin since 2004. With a broad range of advanced laser and light technologies available across our Dublin City, Malahide, Athlone and Mullingar clinics, we can choose the treatment around your skin rather than trying to fit your skin around one machine.
During your consultation, we will look at the type and depth of the concern, your skin type, medical history, recent sun exposure and how much downtime suits you. From there, we can recommend one treatment or create a staged plan.
